They say a person needs just three things to be happy in this world; someone to love something to do and something to hope for.” Tom Bodett
Spring and summer are the most popular seasons for weddings and vacations. It seems that more and more couples are deciding to combine the two with Destination nuptials. While these weddings are more complicated to plan and attend, they offer everyone the opportunity for travel and a special experience. It also presents a wardrobe and packing challenge. Some destination weddings — or other special celebrations — are totally casual held outdoors on a farm or a beach and others are formal affairs in churches, castles or resorts. Regardless of the venue or dress code, it requires planning — especially if you intend to continue on with a personal vacation.
Lucky you if you are participating in a destination special event either as a host or a guest. You will be part of an intimate and special gathering of family and friends and the location will most assuredly be spectacular and provide a memorable experience. So how to approach dressing and packing? Here are some proven strategies.
Weather
A first consideration is the actual location and likely weather conditions. It may be summer but there are definite climate differences between beach and mountain venues and elegant indoor and rustic outdoor settings. There are no guarantees about the weather on specific dates so check for overall, historic conditions and prepare accordingly. Anticipate the unexpected heat, chill, or damp – a wrap is easy to pack.
Dress Code
Perhaps the most important dress guidance is the dress code specified in the invitation. Just because the venue suggests casual attire to you, it’s quite possible a formal event is planned. Adherence to the dress code ensures you will be appropriate for the occasion and shows grace and respect for the hosts.
Planning & Packing
Often because the hosts are asking their guests to travel long distances, there are multiple activities or experiences planned over several days. So, more planning and packing is required but it can also allow for combining with your own travel plans after the various events. It’s at this point you become simultaneously a guest and the host of your own travel event! Versatility and creativity are the keys here — my two favorite opportunities for dressing!
If a formal event is the order of the day, keep it simple! A clean silhouette creates ease of packing as well as wearing. You don’t want layers of fabric taking up valuable packing space. Also consider the setting for your footwear choice. Tall, thin heels are not good on turf or sand or even for navigating pavers, they can easily ruin delicate high heels. Instead, opt for the lowest heel you can for your dress — a low heel or even a pretty, embellished sandal is a better option and may even be useful on your own travels later.
If the dress suggested is casual, look for a dress or pant and top that is comfortable for easy, fun, low key elegance; casual does not mean sloppy or unthoughtful! Later, these items can be incorporated into your own travel plans. If you are shopping for new items for the event, consider the long term wearability in your life. Can the pieces be worn again in your climate, for work or casual, are they items that will work within your preferred color range and style? Versatility here allows you to splurge without guilt!
It’s fun to buy new clothes for special events, but first try shopping in your own closet. Perhaps you already have something perfect for the occasion you purchased and never wore. Or, that can be reimagined and made new with an unexpected pairing. This is where creativity comes in!
And, don’t forget accessories! They so easily add the extra Purely Personal touch and they need very little space in your suitcase!
Bon Voyage!
