The Italian Renaissance of Artistic Style: Couture Fashion Masterpieces by Dolce and Gabbana

“Fashion is art, it’s a form of self expression that transcends boundaries.” Stefano Gabbana

The Dolce and Gabba Exposition (held in the Grand Palais and just ended April 2, 2025) is aptly named: “From the heart to the Hands” It is a spectacular tour de force that showcases the extraordinary vision of two creative minds and the hands and fingers that make the visions tangible, wearable reality.

It is a sold out event everywhere it has been shown — and with good reason; it transports the viewer into a past that greatly contributed to, and still influences, Western culture.

Sicilian Domenico Dolce and Milanese Stefan Gabbana are Italian to the core and proud keepers of the Italian artistic soul and traditional hand crafting skills and excellence. The two met in 1982 while working for the same fashion company. They formed a personal and professional relationship and launched their first independent show in 1985. From the beginning, they combined a sensual aesthetic of bold colors and exquisite fabrics with the intricate details of traditional Italian craftsmanship. This approach became their haute couture signature style which culminates in this astonishing exposition.

The show offers a temporary escape from quotidian reality usually reserved for the theater or rock concerts. In fact, this show is theater and Dolce and Gabbana are literally “rock” star designers, using precious stones, gems, crystals, marble and metals to illuminate the arts of Italy — past and present.

Their themes are drawn from their shared Italian heritage. From ancient Greco-Roman architecture, sculpture and dress to the invention of Grand Opera and, of course, the country’s deeply embedded Catholic culture.

In ten rooms featuring over 200 garments and 300 accessories, each is made more impactful by the incredible attention to the tiniest details of construction. Garments made to celebrate and honor the history and culture of Italian art forms.

These gorgeous garments are created to express the inherent value of art itself. When we are moved to a feeling almost beyond verbal expression – something ineffable, yet real – that is High Art. Dolce and Gabbana reach this emotive state through respect for the past accomplishments of human creation brought forward into today’s world using Haute Couture as their medium.

Of course art can also enhance the everyday items of life and Dolce and Gabbana do not exempt the coffee pot or sunglasses — their SMEG line of appliances elevate daily life with color and a sense of fun!

Whether it’s a new color or texture or a vintage accessory, transcend the boundaries of your everyday life with a little art infused into your Purely Personal style!
